Online Ceramics Workshop (Adult workshop)

This 8-session online Ceramics Workshop for adults is the perfect opportunity to express your creativity and learn new skills from the comfort of your own home. Using basic hand-building techniques, students will build a personal wall clock, a dried flower vase, ceramic collage, and abstract biomorphic sculpture from Air-Dry clay. Students will also learn how to tint, paint, and decorate Air-Dry clay.

Hand-Build Ceramics (Adult workshop)

February 26 - April 29, 2020— SOLD OUT

This 3 months workshop is designed for students who had little previous experience working with clay. Using most popular hand-building techniques (Soft Slab and Coiling) students will build their own tea set (teapot and 2 cups) and flowering vase uniquely decorated with underglazes and glazes.
Students will be exposed to learning the nuances of the process of creating a work of art from clay to the fired piece of art.

    All purchases are non-refundable. Please check dates carefully. Credit will be offered for cancellations at least 3 weeks from the event date. No credit will be offered for cancellations less than 3 weeks out, but you may transfer to another participant. Please respect our need for planning and staffing to run these events. If cancellation is due to weather or instructor illness/emergency, every effort will be made to reschedule, and under those circumstances, refunds may be given if no other reasonable option is possible. Make up classes are not available.

In this 3 month workshop, students are introduced to 3 primary hand-building techniques (including Pinch pot, Slab, and Coiling), along with surface decorating techniques including Glazing, Majolica, Sgraffito, and Mishima. Students will experience small class sizes & instructor led step-by-step demonstrations by our very own ceramics expert, Marina Smelik. By the end of the course, each student will have completed and can take home 4-5 ceramic pieces they’ll be proud to put on full display.

Direct Stone Carving for Beginners (Adult workshop)

In this 3 month workshop, students will be introduced to 4 primary stone working techniques including Carving, Sanding, Polishing, and Mounting. Students will experience small class sizes and instructor led step-by-step demonstrations by our very own 3D art expert, Marina Smelik. Students of all physical strengths are able to successfully do this stone carving project. By the end of the course, each student will have completed and can take home an impressive stone carving they’ll be proud to put on full display.

Landscape Painting Workshop with Colley Whisson

  • Dates: Saturday August 11th – Tuesday August 14th, 2018 (4 x days)

Back by popular demand, Colley Whisson is returning to Art Academia for a 4 day Master Series workshop in which we will work in the studio for 2 days, and 2 days will be spent at a chosen offsite location (Half Moon Bay, Coyote Point or the picturesque streets of San Francisco). Colley's workshops employ a step-by-step process, demonstrating the best approach to constructing a painting.  They are conducted in a positive and uplifting manner, and will focus on tone, composition, brushwork, color saturation, and the importance of edges. 

Colley is an internationally recognized artist from the Brisbane, Australia. Under the guidance of this father, renowned artist Eric Whisson, he commenced oil painting at the age of 20, and has long been considered a leading artist of his generation.

Art Academia is honored to host Slava Korolenkov from Moscow, Russia for a 3 day figure and portrait workshop ether in our San Mateo, CA studio or in San Mateo Central Park. As a graduate of the prestigious Moscow Storgaov Academy of Art, Slava is best known for his mastery of color and bold brushwork  evolved primarily under the influence of Nikolay Fechin, Konstantin Korovin, Michael Vrubel and the French Impressionists.

His works are exhibited internationally and are well represented in private collections throughout Japan, USA, Germany, France, and elsewhere. He has extensive teaching experience both in Russia and abroad, and we are excited to have him share his techniques with us during his Spring trip to California.

A true master Mr. Ernest Baber offers an exciting week of demonstrations in still-life. He will teach methods and principles of the Old Dutch masters focusing on atmosphere, harmony, and light. Ernie Baber has been painting professionally for 30 years, having studied at the Art Students League of New York with anatomy professor Robert Beverly Hale, author of several books on artistic anatomy, and David Leffel, renowned painter and teacher, having published books of his paintings and teachings.
